Forum rules established. Still considering how to display them.
The forum rules has been established. Though, there may be several ways to display them, considering the use of posts and stickies, and where the questions can be posted.
Here are some suggestions, assuming we're following the DO-DON'T system. But if you may have a suggestion better than the other two, feel free to reply. There is still time.
Current Setting: Place all rules together in a sticky
Alternative Setting: Place related rules together in several posts
The format of the alternative setting may look like this (each heading represents a title of a post):
For starters...
Consider what you post…
Keep your post neat and understandable…
Have your say…
Show some respect…
Here are some suggestions, assuming we're following the DO-DON'T system. But if you may have a suggestion better than the other two, feel free to reply. There is still time.
Current Setting: Place all rules together in a sticky
- Questions and answers will be in posts
- But these may not be practically appropriate "topics" for the said forum (or are they)
- The best thing is simplicity: all rules are placed together.
Alternative Setting: Place related rules together in several posts
- Members can reply to the post for questions.
- This makes it easy for members to access a certain set of rules (like when you post something). The rules, of course, can still follow the DO-DON'T principle.
- The rules practically follow as the topics.
The format of the alternative setting may look like this (each heading represents a title of a post):
For starters...
- Do abide by the rules.
- Do use a username that’s easy to understand.
- Do remember that what you post is public.
- Do introduce yourselves, please, so that we can know each other better.
- Do keep avatar and images simple. Avatar images can be up to 150x200 pixels; Signature
images up to 700x250 pixels. Alternatively, you can use text signatures (you
can modify it in the profiles).
Consider what you post…
- Do begin a search first – the answer might already be there. Be patient.
- Do post the right topic in the right forum.
- Do use short titles that give other viewers an idea of what you’re talking about
(for example: “Easiest way to solve the Birthday
Problem”), but Don’t use generic titles like “Help”, or “Help
with stat homework”. - Don’t think we know everything; we’re only limited to basic and college mathematics. We do not claim knowledge in Engineering, Biology, Physics, etc. but if your intention is to clarify some difficult math concept applied in those fields, we’ll be glad to help.
- Don’t always depend on us without exerting your own attempts. We can only help with your homework, not does your homework.
- Don’t discuss inappropriate things! This isn’t a place to talk nonsense.
- Don’t gossip. We have a page specially made for that: MMC Speaks!
Keep your post neat and understandable…
- Do include examples, figures, tables, formulas, etc.
- Don’t use mIxED cApS, ALL CAPS, l33t (leet/symbolic) or chtspk (chatspeak/shortcuts). People may get offended, or annoyed, or even confused. Besides, this is a discussion forum,
and we best use natural words and grammar. - Don’t double-post. Feel free to edit your current one, especially if you have grammatical errors and misspelled words. But don’t edit too much to the point that the discussion flow
will be disrupted. - Don’t piggy-back posts – posting your question as a reply to another question.
- Don’t over-decorate your post with too much smileys, various styles, glitters (perhaps) and etc. These can be quite an eyesore.
Have your say…
- Do react appropriately.
- Do ask if you're having trouble. You can contact the webmasters, or drop by Help
Center. - Do drop by The Suggestion Box and contribute to future improvements.
Show some respect…
- Do be honest, even if others may not be.
- Don’t plagiarize. Do cite sources – generally, media from another author – in your post. Respect legal conventions.
- Don’t use offensive words or images (in your posts, usernames, or whatsoever). Don’t even try to fool our periodically-updated bad words filter by using alternative characters.
- Don’t spam! Don’t advertise! Don’t put virus or malware codes!
- Don’t assault or threaten another member.
- Do report posts that do these offensive things otherwise.
